Three formats of cricket and major tournaments

Understanding the format matters in cricket betting, because each format has different markets, odds and style of play.

T20 Cricket

Just 20 overs per innings — so runs move fastest here. BPL and IPL are both played in this format. Cricket fans in Bangladesh are most active during the BPL season. When the Tigers play in the T20 World Cup, interest rises further.

ODI Cricket

In the 50-over one-day format, the game plan builds gradually, so betting markets shift with each powerplay and middle-over phase. The ICC World Cup, Champions Trophy and bilateral series all come in this format.

Test Cricket

In a five-day Test match, a draw is a valid result, so three outcomes are available to bet on. Wickets falling, weather changes and pitch behaviour all affect live odds.

Alongside cricket, pp also offers football betting. However, cricket and football markets differ — cricket has its own markets like toss, top batsman and over/under runs that football does not have. Just as goal scorer or corner markets are specific to football, wicket-related markets give cricket its own distinct experience. pp Cricket Markets — Different Types of Bets

Cricket betting goes well beyond win or lose. Each market calls for a different approach and focus. Below is a brief look at 7 popular markets available at pp.

Match Winner

A bet on which team will win the match. In T20 and ODI there are only two outcomes (ties are rare), while in Tests three outcomes are possible.

Toss Winner

A bet on who wins the toss at the start of the match — a completely independent market with no connection to the match result.

Top Batsman

A bet on which batsman will score the most runs for their team. This market is also available per innings.

Total Runs (Over/Under)

A bet on whether total runs in a match or innings will be above (over) or below (under) a set number.

Multi Bet (Multiple Selections)

Placing bets on multiple matches or markets at once to create a combined odds figure — if all selections are correct, the full return is paid.

Powerplay Runs

How many runs will be scored during the opening powerplay overs — an active market in T20 betting.

Understand odds in three formats

Betting sites display odds in three ways — decimal, fractional and American. All three express the same number differently.

Format Odds for Team A to win Odds for Team B to win
Decimal 2.25 1.25
Fractional 5/4 1/4
American +125 −400

Example 1 — Team A (Underdog)

A ৳200 bet returns ৳450 if Team A wins (৳250 profit + ৳200 stake). If Team A loses, ৳200 is gone.

Example 2 — Team B (Favourite)

Decimal 1.25 means Team B is the favourite. A ৳200 bet returns ৳250 if Team B wins (only ৳50 profit). American −400 means a ৳400 bet is needed to win ৳100.

Which format is easiest?

Bangladeshi bettors generally find the decimal format easiest — multiply the odds by the stake to get the total return. Fractional is mainly used in British markets, and American on US sites.

If three selections in a multi bet have odds of 1.40, 1.70 and 1.80, the combined odds come to roughly 4.28. A ৳100 bet returns ৳428 if all three selections are correct. If one selection is wrong, the full ৳100 is lost.

These are examples to aid understanding — they are not a guarantee of real winnings. Betting is a form of entertainment.

Live In-Play Betting — while the match is on

Live betting in cricket means the ability to place bets after the match has started — and odds change with every ball.

When a wicket falls, the batting side's odds lengthen and the bowling side's shorten — in-play reflects this change instantly.

When run pressure builds in the final overs, the over/under market becomes active — because each delivery can shift the calculation.

After the powerplay, new markets can open based on the run situation, such as the method of the next wicket.

If weather changes or the Duckworth-Lewis method comes into effect, the target can change, which is reflected directly in live odds.

Live betting in a Test match is more complex — as the pitch wears, spinners become more effective, which shows up in next-wicket odds.

Some practical points on cricket betting

Bet according to the format

The pace of play and the markets differ across T20, ODI and Test. Focus on the format you understand best.

Start with one market

Begin with a straightforward market like match winner. Multi bets and in-play can come later.

Stick to a budget

Decide how much you will bet on each match before it starts. Placing larger bets to recover losses is not a good habit.

Pitch and weather

A spin-friendly pitch and humid conditions favour bowlers — this affects the toss and powerplay markets.

Entertainment is the main goal

Betting is a form of entertainment. Winning is not guaranteed, so enjoy it responsibly and within your limits. Read the responsible gaming guidelines.

Know the rules

Each market has its own rules — especially regarding what happens if a match is abandoned. Check the terms and conditions before placing a bet.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cricket Betting

T20 has more big shots in 20 overs per innings, so total runs and over/under markets move quickly. In ODIs, middle-over strategy matters more, making markets after the powerplay more active. In Tests, a draw is a valid result, so the match winner market has three options.

If a match is abandoned due to rain or the result is decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method, the outcome of each market depends on the relevant rules. Generally, if no official result is declared, many bets are considered void and the stake is refunded. See pp's terms and conditions for details.

In cricket, every ball is a new event — a wicket, a six or a dot ball all shift the probability of either team winning. The bookmaker reflects these changes in the odds instantly. That is why quick decisions are needed during in-play.

In a multi bet, the odds of multiple selections are multiplied to create one combined odds figure — giving a higher potential return. But if any selection is wrong, the entire bet is lost. Example: three selections at 1.40 × 1.70 × 1.80 = combined odds of roughly 4.28. A ৳100 bet returns ৳428 if all are correct, but one wrong selection means losing everything.

In the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the T20 format keeps match winner, toss winner, powerplay runs and over/under markets most active. Live in-play markets are also popular in BPL, since the outcome can change right up to the last over.
